Our commitment
Burnham Center for Community Advancement is committed to making https://www.burnhamcenter.org accessible to everyone, including people with disabilities. We work to meet recognized accessibility standards, we test our site against them, and we treat accessibility as ongoing work rather than a one-time project. We work on behalf of the whole San Diego region, and we want everyone in it to be able to use this site.
Conformance status
The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) define requirements for making web content more accessible to people with disabilities. They have three levels of conformance: Level A, Level AA and Level AAA.
https://www.burnhamcenter.org is partially conformant with WCAG 2.2 Level AA. Automated and manual testing of the page templates before launch found no failures in the site’s own templates. The exceptions below come from content and services the site includes rather than from its design and code.
“Partially conformant” means that some parts of the content do not fully conform to the accessibility standard. The known exceptions are listed under “Known limitations” below, along with what we are doing about each one.

Known limitations
We are aware of the following limitations and are working to resolve them. This list is reviewed at each site update.
| Area | The barrier | Who it affects | What we are doing | Target |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| OneSD map | The interactive map is provided by Google and cannot be fully operated by keyboard or screen reader | People who use a keyboard or a screen reader | Every location on the map is also provided as a text list with links, directly under the map | In place at launch |
| Research reports and other PDF downloads | Some reports were produced before this site and may not be tagged for screen readers | People who use a screen reader | We will provide the information in a report in an accessible format on request, and we are reviewing the existing reports in order of how often they are downloaded | On request, at any time |
Some content on this site is provided by third parties, including the Google map on our Community Fabric page, our donation platform, and event registration pages hosted by other organizations. We do not control the accessibility of that content. We raise issues with those providers when we find them, and we will help you get the same information another way if you contact us.
What we have done
To make this site accessible we set WCAG 2.2 Level AA as the target for design and development; built every page with semantic HTML, headings and landmarks; made every control work from the keyboard with a visible focus indicator, including the menu, archive filters, events calendar, bio panels and form dropdown; checked text and control colors against the contrast requirements; honor reduced-motion settings and give moving content a pause control; provide a text list of every map location for screen reader users; label every form field and report form errors in text next to the field; and require alternative text for content images in the editing system. Accessibility is part of our design and development process rather than a check at the end, and it is included in our review whenever we publish new content or features.
Technical information
The accessibility of this site relies on the following technologies to work with the particular combination of web browser and any assistive technologies or plugins installed on your computer: HTML, CSS, JavaScript and WAI-ARIA.
How we tested
This site was last assessed on October 19, 2026 by MiresBall, the site’s design and development partner. We used a self-evaluation against WCAG 2.2 Level AA on a representative sample of pages. Testing covered the home page, an initiative page with the OneSD map and partner directory, the Board of Directors page, the News, Events (month and list views), Research and Bright Spots listings with their filters, a news post, an event, a research report, a Bright Spot story, the Contact page and form, the Give Now donation window, and the Privacy Policy page. It included automated scanning with axe-core 4.10 alongside manual keyboard navigation of the header menu, banner, filters and donation window. Screen reader testing with VoiceOver on macOS and iOS is scheduled before launch. Automated tools alone detect only a portion of accessibility barriers, which is why manual testing is part of every assessment we run.
